Madison Marcus Celebrates 100 Years of Women in Law and Launches Women of MM Initiative.

On 21 November 2018, Madison Marcus held a celebration of 100 Years of Women in Law, the launch of our Women of MM initiative, and of course, to celebrate the 2018 Festive Season with our valued clients.

Madison Marcus was enormously proud to be able to host the first female President of the NSW Court of Appeal, The Honourable Justice Margaret Beazley AO as our Guest of Honour. Justice Beazley spoke to our assembled staff and guests on the challenges in the law today compared to when Her Honour first entered the profession. Justice Beazley touched on issues of gender but also on the demands of the profession on all individuals:

This is a challenging and demanding profession. Work life balance is an issue that is endemic. I can only encourage everyone to shut down the computer on a Friday and pursue your passion.

in this 100th year since the Women’s Legal Status Act 1918 (NSW) was passed, enabling women to practise law, be elected to Parliament and be the Lord Mayor of Sydney, can I again thank you and, I am sure on behalf of all your guests, congratulate you on your dynamic, diverse and highly professional legal practice.”

With Justice Beazley being a well-known art lover and collector in the legal world, it was with pleasure that Madison Marcus was able to present Her Honour with an original artwork, “Regal Roses II” (oil/acrylic on canvas), by Madison Marcus Advisory Director, Kenneth W H Lee, who devotes any spare time he as to his passion for art and has gained recognition for his work internationally and receives commissions from all over the world.

Madison Marcus Director, Theresa Armstrong, thanked Justice Beazley for her vision, hard work and efforts over the years that have been instrumental in reshaping the role of Women in Law. Speaking on the centenary of Women in Law and of Justice Beazley, Ms. Armstrong said:

“2018 marks a momentous year for the NSW Legal Profession. Celebrating 100 years since women were given the right to practice law in this State. You have been named as one of the 100 women of Influence by AFR and have championed significant developments in a profession that has been dominated by men for so long.

As a trailblazer your success sends a powerful message to women in law and women in general. For me personally, as a Lawyer, an event that sticks out in my mind was when yourself, along with the Honourable Justices Virginia Bell and Carolyn Simpson made history in 1999 when you sat on Australia’s first all-female appeal bench”.

Theresa Armstrong is one of Madison Marcus’ greatest success stories, having begun her career as our Receptionist 16 years ago, to now sitting as a Director of the Board. Theresa credits the supportive culture fostered by her now fellow Directors, Bechara Shamieh, Ramy Qutami & Denis Hall as integral to her work in developing her career to the heights she has now reached, along with generation of women before her who put up the fight, and it must be acknowledged, the men who have recognised and championed legal talent without any apprehension of gender bias.

With a view to celebrating the history of our profession and those who have laid the foundation for women in the law in 2018; and a desire to be at the forefront of shaping the role of women in the law in years to come, Madison Marcus officially launched its “Women of MM” Initiative at the event. This initiative is designed to create a platform to support the women of Madison Marcus. Madison Marcus want to not only adhere to best practice in gender equality in our workplace – but to establish best practice in this area and in all initiatives we undertake. This is why we extend the initiative to not only include our female staff, but also our clients, the partners and families of our staff and all the women in our network.

Women of MM aims to help its members flourish and thrive in their careers and personal lives, to acknowledge their achievements and mentor and support them to the next level in their professional and personal lives; because Madison Marcus recognises and appreciates the immeasurable contribution these women make towards all aspects of life.

The Women of MM Initiative will run programs, develop and implement policies that will have a tangible benefit to working women and their families, as well as to the success of the firm; offer mentoring and coaching; provide access to tools relevant to personal development and host events that connect like- minded women with each other which in turn enables the growth of their own individual networks.
