Robert Tomlinson

Special Counsel

Robert is Special Counsel in the firm’s Banking & Finance division.

Robert has previously been a long term partner of Corrs Chambers Westgrah where he established and headed up the Banking and Finance group as both National Chairman and head of the Sydney Office Banking and Finance Practice Group.

Robert is a highly regarded senior and experienced banking and finance lawyer. He has over 30 years of practical commercial and legal experience in:

  • Asset based and receivables financing;
  • Commercial property and construction financing;
  • Mezzanine financing;
  • Infrastructure projects and transactions;
  • Corporate financing including club and syndicated financing;
  • Securities enforcement and recovery; and
  • Workouts.

Robert also has a wealth of experience in major property transactions across Australia, including the acquisition and structured financing of the Hyatt Hotel Canberra, Observation City Hotel Perth, Chifley Tower in Sydney and Citicentre Tower Centre on the corner of Market and Pitt Streets, Sydney.

He has advised a consortium of BT Funds Management Ltd, Hasting Funds Management Limited and the Cairns Port Authority bidding for the acquisition of the Brisbane International Airport.

He was a foundation practitioner in the area of Securitisation, having practiced in that area since its inception in Australia and was responsible for structuring and documentation of ANZ Bank’s securitization programmes including:

  • Residential mortgages;
  • Credit cards;
  • Finance lease receivables; and
  • Commercial loan receivables.

A number of these matters involved instructing UK and US law firms in relation to promissory note, bond and commercial paper issues out of the UK and US financial markets.

He has previously been a partner with Herbert Geer, Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Tress Cox Lawyers. In particular he was responsible for setting up and leading the Corrs Chambers Westgarth Banking and Finance Group as its national Chairman for over 5 years.
